The Marches is a downwards slope of hills
and valleys which descend from the
Apennines towards the sea.
In the internal areas, ancient towns
survive, together with mediaeval
settlements enclosed in the walls,
castles and rocks which overhang the
hills.
The hills themselves represent the best
areas for the prosperity of the vines
and the production of excellent grapes.
The light and heat from the sun allow
for a high sugar content and delicate
aromas, both essential for good wines….and
in this region, there truly are some!
The Marches is made rich by a fragmented
vine-growing and wine-producing industry,
with very small or medium-sized
developing businesses, 30 thousand
hectares of wines, approximately a third
of the production of DOC wines, 2 and a
half million of hectolitres of wine,
which is predominantly white.
