In the Marches, the vine-growing and wine-producing
industry has, in the last twenty years, taken on a fundamental
role in the agricultural economy.
The annual production corresponds to 2 million hectolitres
of wine on 20,000 hectares of vineyards. Approximately
10,000 hectares are included in the official roll of the
production of the 14 DOC wines, and numerous additional
entries feature, regarding the specific characteristics
of some wines, or rather which refer to some geographical
sub-zones. About 20 typologies of DOC wines derive from
these, which, together with the various table wines or
I.G.T. (Typical Geographical Indication) of the Region,
make for a turnover of approximately 400 million euros, equal to 15% of the gross production saleable
in agriculture.
About 20% of Marches production is made up of red wines.
The rest is predominantly Verdicchio, in its three DOC
denominations: from the castles of Jesi Classico, Jesi,
and Matelica.
The incidence of the DOC wines in the total Marches production
is about 20% and it is steadily increasing.
